Vacation until 7/5

Chelsea and I are going to VA tomorrow and we'll be back on the 5th. I haven't been able to play too many games this week aside from Sonic Adventure and the Uncharted 3 Multiplayer Beta, and I probably won't be playing anything but YGO WC2011 over the weekend. By the way, have you guys tried the Uncharted multiplayer beta yet? It's really good. There are 2 maps this week and 3-4 game modes, and will change after the 7th I believe? I had planned to upload videos for everyone to enjoy, but I will save that for next Tuesday. If you haven't given it a try yet, do yourself a favor and hop in. Players that have never played Uncharted may be a bit overwhelmed(especially in deathmatch), but once you get used to it, you'll be "pwning noobs" in no time.

The other cool release is Dynasty Warriors Gundam 3, and I would buy it if I had money. I would also need to have time to play and post about it, but rest assured, I am sure it is awesome. (DW)Gundam Musou 3 was on my HUGE list so I already new it was going to be good.

I will be on Twitter and BG for the weekend, so I don't plan to be out of the Gaming loop. The only thing I won't be able to do is upload that Uncharted 3 video and, or course, post on the blog. Eithe rway, I will see you guys on Tuesday and happy gaming!

Vacation until 7/5

Chelsea and I are going to VA tomorrow and we'll be back on the 5th. That means no posts about how much fun LFS(Light Fiend Summon) is, or the "new style" build using Glow-Up, Level Eater and One for one. I decided not to bring any cards, despite the other judges at YCSPVD telling me about all the cool new shops that have opened. Yard sales are a different story though. If I can get our own transportation, I will definitely try to pick up any cards I see over the weekend. Luckily, the temperature will be in the upper 80's and low 90's, with a chance of rain on Sunday.

Nationals is coming up soon, so I hope everyone is getting ready for that. There have been many other countries that have done theirs and there are LOTS of Reborn Tengu on the top 32 of each. Surprisingly, top 8 is never as many Tengu Synchro decks, so that goes to show that not everyone can win with it. Well, either that or many Tengu Synchro players eliminated each other.

Also, Untapped Games has a shop in Pawtucket, surprisingly close to Die Hard Games. They are interested in becoming an official tournament store, so long as they can get 8-16 players to participate. Blog friend Kavy and I assured them that we will spread the word around. So if you live in Rhode Island, or near the border in Mass like I do, check out the website for Untapped Games at http://www.untappedgames.com/ There will be at least 1 Konami Judge for that location(Me!) and the guys have a great attitude about table top games. Tournaments would be on Tuesdays, so if you play at Wizard's Duel on Friday, Stillpoint on Saturday, Veteran's Games on Sunday, and DHG on Monday, you can add Untapped to your YGO work week! I'll keep posting details about when they are up and running for open play.

Anyway, I'll see you guys on Twitter. If not Twitter, then here on Tuesday. Don't try to look for me on facebook, you won't find me. (lol)

Video Dump 1

I have decided that, along with full articles, this blog needs to show more of what I'm interested in. Since it is very difficult to talk about a game that I don't have, or isn't out yet, I will start a series of Video Dumps. Basically, these are just great videos, courtesy of other authors, that will hopefully be as exciting for you readers as they are for me.

YCS Providence Part 3

If you have been on the internet lately, you would be able to see the top 32 decklist on Konami's strategy site.

7 "Pure" Tengu Plant Synchro
5 Six Samurai
3 Gravekeeper
3 X-Saber
2 "Pure" Agents
1 Herald/Hyperion
1 Scraps
1 Blackwing
1 Fabled
1 Tech Genus
1 Water Tengu Synchro
1 Infernity
1 Frog monarch
1 Chaos Plant Synchro (no Tengu)
1 Machina Gadget
1 Macro
1 Anti-Meta

Out of 32 decks, 12 of them used Reborn Tengu.
11 out of those 12 decks combined Reborn Tengu with the Plant Engine.

Taking just the deck list at face-value, you could say that the current deck spread in yugioh is pretty diverse. Even though a LOT of people were using Tengu plants as at least part of their deck, a decent number of decks topped without using Reborn Tengu at all. Still, a lot of people say that Reborn Tengu is hurting the game because it promotes pressing the opponent without volition. In Monarch's, you can bait out solemn warning by tributing Tengu for a Caius, then get your 1700 ATK monster back. In Tengu Synchro decks, 1 Giant Trunade and a face up Reborn Tengu could be the death of the opposing player. A lot of people on the internet say that Reborn Tengu will go to 2 in September, especially with the release of Hyper Librarian in July, the card becomes even more combo-centric. The card itself is only so powerful. There are just so many things you can do with it that make it too much to handle. It is a shame because Reborn Tengu can do more than give players a free pass to extend their field presence. This can be seen in decks like Adam Moshinsky's Macro build and Sorosh Saberian's Fabled, both of which ran three. Of course I'm not saying that either player invented the idea of running Tengu in those decks, but it shows that Tengu can do things besides providing synchro material fodder. Other decks can benefit from Reborn Tengu too, like the recent uprising in Horn of the Phantom Beast users. Because Tengu is a beast-warrior, he can be equipped with Horn in the damage step just like a Flamvell Firedog, T.G. Rush Rhino, or Tanngrisnir of the Nordic Beasts. Although they SHOULD probably semi-limit him to 2 per deck, there are a number of other cards that need to be limited to one in September.

For those who did not run Reborn Tengu, they still shared in the top 32 limelight. I for one was suprised to see Pure Agents (Planets) in the top deck list. I have never been a fan of the deck, because of the fact that their normal monsters are so weak. I guess that the ability to drop boss monsters with ease is what makes the deck so good. A lot of people say it is a very consistent deck too. Dragunities are also very consistent, but not many players use that deck anymore. The Herald/Hyperion deck that got into the top 8 really surprised me, as I have not thought of using Agents in that way. Deep Draw Hyperionswarn? Sure. Agent-Return? Sounds like fun. But Agents with Herald was the last thing I expected to see in the top 8. That just goes to show that boss monsters with good effects aren't just limited to synchros. Luke Mattingly's deck packs so many anti-monster cards (Heralds and 2 main decked Gozen Matches) that it is surprising how he even lost. Oh he lost against the YCS winner...Unfortunately, there was no feature match for them, and I did not attend Day 2 of the YCS, so I have no way to let you guys know how he lost. I'll just assume that he did not get out Krystia or Gozen or enough effect-stun to keep Plant Tengu at bay.

The other deck I am excited about is the Scrap deck that got into Top 16. I do not play Scraps, but I have all of the cards, so I could play it if I wanted. One interesting thing to note is that he did not run Machine Emperor Granel. Granel is a terrible topdeck, but if you draw into him early on in the game, you are almost guaranteed to summon it. Worst thing that could happen is that you bait out Solemn Warning. Instead, Guillermo Morales opted for a more consistent build. Did I mention it had 3 Reborn Tengu too? Honestly, I would have made a few changes in his card lineup, such as his 3 Horn of the Phantom Beast and 3 Effect Veiler. It almost seemed as if he decided to main more cards that he would usually side in, just for the greater chance at winning game 1 against unfavorable matches. I think I would love to see a Safe Zone instead of 1 of the Veilers. As situational as it sounds, Safe Zone has some nice synergy with Scrap Dragon. If you equip it to your opponent's monster in chain with Scrap Dragon's effect, you can destroy a card with Scrap Dragon's effect and destroy the monster equipped with Safe Zone. Guillermo ended up losing to Six Samurai. In all honestly, Six Sams SHOULD be a favorable matchup against Scraps, as you can synchro into many different monsters that can all attack over a Shi En. However, a lot of Six Sam players are siding in cards that would hurt the scrap deck, such as Dimensional Fissure. Also, losing your scrapstorms to a 1st turn Shi En also sucks, so the scrap player's side-deck needs to be spot on.

The last deck that I am excited about is the 2nd place Infernity deck. There isn't much that makes this deck special over other Infernity decks except for the fact that it uses 18 monster and only 1 Infernity Inferno, a bad ratio if you ask me. Most infernity decks use a lower monster count or more Infernos. His loss in the final round feature match shows how a build like his can be inconsitent. Round 1 gave him a monster-heavy hand. He managed to get out of it by Brionac bouncing his own cards until he could One-for-one and empty his hand. In the end, he still lost to Mirror Force. In Round 2, he lost to D.D. Crow and Royal Oppression. Oh well, maybe we can see a better build at Nationals.

Dueling Network

A Yugioh post in the gaming blog? This must be some kind of mistake.

Rest assured though, this is a gaming blog post.

In the beginning of the year, I was so excited for the new YGO World Championship 2011:Over the Nexus Video Game to be released. The day that it was, I traded in my old WC2010 game and bought the new one. Just like every other year's incarnation, I played the game during all of the off hours I had available. Lunch break? Yugioh. Driving to and from work? Yugioh while driving(NOT RECOMMENDED FOR ANYONE). Bed time? Yugioh until I become tired. The variety of duelists and card selection in the game was a lot of fun. Eventually, I did hit a moment where I did not want to grind out duels to unlock packs. Not only that, but my deck was so boring (Machina Gadgets), that I just didn't want to use it anymore. It sucks when you stop playing a game you really like just because a few sections of the game become a chore rather than being fun. If you hop on google, you can find a replacement for your Yugioh needs in the form of fan-made online games!

The one I had been playing for a while was Duel Monsters Genesis on Byond. Byond games use a low bit style of graphics, which looks pretty cutesy at first, but there are more graphical fan based games on the internet. DMG was riddled with drama. If you weren't a "regular" in their game, meaning someone that posts on the forums and gets involved with drama, then you had no respect. Most of these people were game masters and moderators of some kind, so if you wanted to defend yourself against their attacks, you could be easily banned from the game. Another popular fan based gamed was YVD. A lot of people still play YVD because of its simple controls. The only issue I have with it is connecting to other duelists, which is often done through iRC channels. Any game that makes you go through a different program to play is not worth it. The game that people ARE playing right now is Dueling Network.

Photobucket

Dueling Network is a fairly new fan based dueling program. It is entirely Flash, so there is no need to download any unnecessary files to your system. It has a hub with a simple, real time game lobby. That way, instead of hopping on iRC, or roaming around with your pixel character shouting for duels, you can leave room open for anyone to join you in, or just join another's room. The game itself is very well detailed. Like YVD, it is slightly manual, so if you are a beginner, be sure to read up on how the different phases in YGO work. There is a rock-scissors-paper match to decide who has the option for turns. After that, the game deals both players 5 cards, 6 if you go first. If necessary, you can click between different phases in the turn to help you keep track of what you can do at what time. When you want to actually play a card, you can put your mouse over it. Not only does a nice description pop up on the side of the screen(with images!), but a pop-up menu rises from the card. You can choose between all the basic things like "Set", Special Summon, Remove from game, and even things like placing cards on the bottom of the deck. All the commands have sounds, but I would love to see more animations. The most necessary one would be a generic "activate effect" option on the menu of each card. The command doesnt have to be extravagant, but it should do something so that you do not have to type out "Eff" every time a card effect should activate.

Photobucket

Above all else, the game has a great card pool and many people to play against. Of course, a lot of people are trying to test tournament-worthy decks, so there are times that you may be stomped by a tier 1 build. If necessary, you can always make rooms with a disclaimer on them.
"No Six Samurai"
"No Plant Tengu"
"Beginners only"
That sort of thing. The more you win, the more your rank and reputation rise. It is probably still in the works, but for now, win totals unlock new avatars for your profile. Twenty-five -> 50 -> 75 -> 150 -> 200 ->300 ->400 And so on. And the rewards are mostly the anime character cards like Blue Eyes White Dragon, Elemental Hero Neos, and assorted boss monsters once you get above 750 wins. Hopefully the creator has more plans for that in the future.

At the moment I have a 499/70 score. That is 40 wins and 21 losses. Reputation is...fickle. According to the game's forum, you gain reputation for doing things like admitting defeat to other players. Obviously, it is difficult to go undefeated in this game, but a player like me who does not use tier 1 decks, has a ~50% win/lose ratio. Since I don't lose enough, my reputation isn't very high. I would like to see that changed in some way, perhaps if you lose a duel, you can give your opponent a reputation bump. As of right now, you can only give your opponent reputation minuses by taking a game loss and a reputation loss.

Photobucket
If you haven't figured it out already. I am Imperialdramon.

All in all, it is a pretty fun game. No need to grind out enemies on my Nintendo DS, or deal with drama on other fan games. If you like building decks and testing them, I would say Dueling Network may be the place for you.

Light Fiend Summon Part 2

Locals last night was relatively small. I believe we had 18 players, with top 8. Friend of the blog Kavy would be there for a short time, so I was able to borrow his Reborn Tengu to try a more consistent version of the Fabled Deck aka LFS - Light Fiend Summon.

As a lot of you guys know, a Fabled Deck from Sorosh Saberian did make it into the top 32 of YCS Providence. While I was judging the event, I do remember seeing a Fabled Deck in the top tables on Saturday night. Whether that was Sorosh or not, I won't know until the deck list is up on Konami's blog. From what I saw, his deck was 100% Synchro. You kill the opponent's backrow with Trunade, Space Typhoons and Dust Tornado, then you go into a frenzy of synchro summoning that should eventually lead you to win the game. If I remember correctly, he was using Reborn Tengu, plants, Reckless Greed, Instant Fusion, and even a tech Quillbolt Hedgehog, all for the purpose of dropping a full field of synchro monsters easily. As powerful as this sounds, he ended up losing to Machina Gadgets, which is actually a tough match-up against his deck. You may explode into an awesome field, but Machina Gadgets have D.Prisons, Warnings, and Fortress's destruction effect waiting for you. Then on their turn, they have smashing grounds and more monster cards in hand. Their conservative play punishes decks that have to overextend to win.

LFS still uses the Tengus even though I hate the idea of only running 2 Krus. It is still an explosive deck when it can be, but instead of exploding into a full field of Synchros, it explodes into half a field of synchro monsters and multiple backrow cards. A lot of people call this a "control" version of the Fabled Deck, rather than the recently topping OTK versions. Most cards in both decks are the same, but LFS just has a different trap lineup than the others. Cards like Karma Cut hurt a lot of top decks right now, and can completely kill an opposing player's Tengu engine. Then, I am able to use staples such as Mirror Force and Torrential Tribute, allowing me to pass turn 1 and not take as much damage as the other decks that only have 2 Solemn Warnings to hold their opponent back. Besides that, LFS has more individual Fableds in it, instead of losing 8 card slots to 3 Tengu, 2 Lonefire, Glow Up, Spore, and Dandylion. Here is a look at the deck:

Monsters: 22
3 Grimro
3 Chawa
3 Cerburrel
3 Tengu
3 Snipe Hunter
2 Ganashia
2 Krus
1 Sangan
1 Nozoochee
1 Kushano
Spells: 11
2 Avarice
2 MST
2 Instant Fusion
1 Reborn
1 Trunade
1 Mind Control
1 Card Destruction
1 Dark Hole
Traps: 7
2 Warnings
2 Karma Cut
1 Dust Tornado
1 Mirror Force
1 Torrential Tribute

In all honesty, I don't like Card Destruction much in this deck. Nor do I like Dark World Dealings or Morphing Jar, and those don't even have a slot in my deck. Card Destruction is more of a last ditch effort to get something good or to place something on the field, at the cost of a -1. If there was a Quickplay Spell, or another good Spell that isn't called Lightning Vortex, then that would probably work better than Card Destruction. I don't consider Dark World Lightning a good replacement, as the deck already runs 2 MST, Dust Tornado, and Trunade. Some people op for Monster Reincarnation. That can also be a good choice, but sometimes you don't have any good targets in the graveyard. I may give it a try, as I almost always side out Car Destruction after the first game.

That build got me into the top 4 at locals, which was a lot of fun. My loss was against a Plant Tengu deck which is supposedly a similar match-up. This is where Karma Cut and Warnings shine, as every time I play against plant synchro, the results are usually the same. If that deck doesn't draw or mill into all of its "one-of" cards, it will stall until it does. This is the time where LFS can go for the kill. While they are stalling with Lonefire->Lonefire->Dandylion with no set cards, you can easily spew out Ragins without much worry. If the monster is face-down, it is either a ryko or a plant, neither of which is very harmful. In my opinion, the only dangers in the Plant Tengu deck is the Gorz while their field is empty. If you leave gorz and its token on the field, you will give your opponent the chance at a level 8 synchro using Glow-Up or Spore. Luckily, if my turn went well, I can have multiple facedown cards that can stop any synchro attempt.

I believe that LFS and Fabled Decks are actually rather difficult to play. It takes a bit of skill to figure out how to turn a hand full of incompatible cards into something good. You also have to know how to take a hit on that first turn where you can't commit to the field. I will probably play this same deck on Saturday too. Wish me luck!

YCS Providence Part 2

Well, day 1 is already over. I really wanted to post about it but I was judging the event.

Before the event even started, I had a nice dinner with some of the other judges. Jambalaya with muscles, scallops, shrimp and chicken breast; so good you wouldn't believe. Should've topped it off with a good drink, but I stuck with water because I'm lame.

The Rhode Island Convention Center is a pretty snazzy place. Put smack-dab in the center of downtown Providence, it had all the luster of Hotels, Malls, and Pride Parade traffic at around 7PM. With 700-800 participants, not including venders and visitors, it almost seemed too big for the YCS. But that's okay, more space means less cramping in player seating. I must say that I did expect more players, seeing as how this was the last YCS before Nationals. I guess we were a little too deep in New England for people to warrant traveling to us. Might not sound like a big deal, but if I ran an event and got considerably less people in certain locations, I wouldn't take the event to that location any more. Let's hope that a large scale Connecticut event would do better than Rhode Island, which is probably a difference of only 200 miles.

The first day of YCSPVD was a lot of fun though. The biggest part of judging is having confidence in your rulings, and I felt good about each ruling I made. Of course, I was appealed on 2 of them, in which the head judge spoke in contrast. But hey, that's part of learning the game I guess. The first was Kinetic Soldier vs Honest. Kinetic Soldier activates at the start of damage calculation. I knew that you could activate Honest at a lot of different times in the damage step, so I figured that there is a sub step after Kinetic resolves that you can use Honest from your hand. I was informed that not only can only 1 chain occur during the part of damage calculation that Kinetic Soldier activates, but also that that time of activation is the last moment either player has to use a card. In this case, you can only chain Honest to Kinetic Soldier's trigger effect, so that the light monster gains 1350 attack and the Kinetic Soldier gains an additional 2000. The second mistake was a silly priority question for summoning monsters.

Everyone else's questions were pretty straight forward and I didn't have to correct much:
1) Saber Hole can not negate the summon of Gorz.
2) Solemn Warning can not negate the activation or resolution of Infernity Launcher.
3) If your opponent uses Dark Hole and you chain an effect to summon a Six Samurai monster to the field, you can not activate Musakani during the resolution of those effects.
4) If you switch control of Caius and a TG monster using TG-EM1, Cauis will not lose its target. Furthermore, Caius will deal 1000 damage to your (new) opponent if the monster was Dark.
5) Reborn Tengu can not activate its effect from inside of the deck.

Speaking of Tengu, I hate Tengu plant decks. It capitalizes on the worst part of Reborn Tengu, the fact that you can make a full field of synchros and 1700 ATK monsters with it. I judged Attack of the Giant Card (TRISHURAAAAAA) and at least 5 win-a-mats, and 3 of the winners were Tengu Plant decks. I have seen Tengu Plants get out of the most ridiculous 1st turn Six Samurai fields. It almost makes you think that Brionac is the problem, and maybe it is. Perhaps we should get a format with Goyo Guardian and no Brionac and see how that fairs for a year. I don't like the deck, but if you dont think it is unfair, let's take a look at one of the plays my win-a-mat player made against Six Samurai.
Samurai Field: Gateway of the Six, Shi En, Grandmaster, Kizan, Kizan, Musakani, Musakani.
1) Charge of the Light Brigade, opponent negates it with Shi En(bad move, but it isn't going to matter, don't worry). Mills off 1 Glow Up, 1 lonefire, 1 Avarice.
2) Giant Trunade
3) Normal Tengu. One for One discard dandy for spore.
4) Synchro for Formula and draw 1 card.
5) Synchro for Brionac, special summon Tengu.
6) Special Summon Spore from the Graveyard by removing Lonefire, it is level 4 now. Synchro Spore, Tengu and a token for Trishula, remove Shi En from the game, special summon Tengu.
7) Mill for Glow-up Bulb, special summon it. Monster Reborn for Tengu. Synchro Glow-up and 2 Tengu for Trishula, remove grandmaster from the game.
8) Bounce both Kizan back and attack for 2700+2700+2300 = 7700.

He actually won on that turn and I really wish I had remembered how he kept a Tengu on the field. There may have been a mind control involved, that way he could sync 1 Tengu with a Kizan to make Trishula. Either way, you can see how a deck with good monsters and a bunch of Limited spells and traps can be very powerful.

In my last post, I said that I wanted to see other decks than Tengu Synchro in the top tables last night, and I was happy to see some good ones!
-I saw at least 1 Fabled deck, which was awesome. Of course, the guy I watched was using a more explosive version, utilizing Tengu, a few plant monsters, and a few other cards instead of the more controlled version I like.
-I saw lots of gladiator beast decks, which I feel is a great deck right now thanks to Forbidden Lance, Safe Zone, and D.Prison.
-I saw a couple of Scrap decks, but I'm not sure how many of them survived.
-Sabers are still on of the best decks in Yugioh. Every single monster in that deck is good, and the only losses I've seen is when they COULDN'T draw a monster.

A few of the people at my locals did make day 2, so that is very exciting. I would play a bit of the public events today, but I don't want any of the prizes. I got my Akiza mat, Essedarii mat, and the Sun and Moon Dragon mat. I got packs and my binder, so driving back to providence to win some turbo packs, a giant Shi En, or MORE Akiza mats isn't sounding too thrilling.

I'll probably chill at home, maybe drive around for some yard sales or something. I'll play Yugioh tomorrow at locals.

YCS Providence - Part 1

The Yugioh Championship Series in Providence is THIS weekend! Today is Wednesday, that is soooooo close. My gosh, my first YCS, what deck am I going to use??

None.

"WHAT!? You live less than 30 minutes away from the venue, why aren't you playing?"

I'm actually judging at this event. A lot of people in New England would love to play at this tournament. Instead of playing, I would much rather judge. As much as I like playing the game, judging and overseeing events is a very different experience. To be honest, the amount of fun that some players have is directly related to how their tournaments are ran. A good example was at locals not too long ago. Our card shop, which is more dedicated to other games than YGO, runs each Yugioh tournament with no official "judge" and store associate organizers. The Organizers do not know the rules of the game, less so how to call a dispute between players. Because of that, a few player interactions go down the toilet. If the Organizers doesn't know how to deal with a dispute, he can easily dismiss it, call their match a draw, and do a number of things that the players simply won't agree with. Judging for me is fun because I feel that making players agree with your ideas, feel satisfied, AND have fun is the combination for awesome events.

This is the last YCS in North America before the North American World Qualifers. I'm pretty sure YCSPVD is the last chance for players to get an invite to the World Qualifiers, so I expect the tournament floor to be a red zone. Not red with conflict, but red with passion to get into Day 2. The deck variation in the last few YCS tournaments has been pretty wide, but there have been a few "discoveries" across the Internet that may kill variation this weekend. So this post is mostly to think about what kind of decks to expect.

Tengu Plants
I hate this deck. It is pretty much the epitome of "netdecking." The Tengu Plant deck is plant synchro...with Tengu in it. That doesn't mean the deck doesn't work though, the 3 Tengu just about eliminate all other dead monsters in the deck, creating something a lot more consistent. Tengu actually increases consistency in a lot of decks, by giving you a resource that you can use without TOO much fear of repercussions. It also opens up the chance to defeat your opponent in 1 turn using an explosion of synchros. Two synchros and a Tengu could easily deal 6500 damage to your opponent, if not more. What's even better is how easy the deck is to build. Some people don't even bother with expensive cards like Solemn Warning. Once you get a Glow Up Bulb and 3 Tengu, you just need synchro monsters to make a complete deck. I expect to see many, many Tengu plant variations. It will probably be 40% of the entire population of duelists this weekend.

Samurai
We all know that Samurai are very powerful, but they weren't always consistent. Now that Extreme Victory has been released, the Samurai deck is more consistent than ever. You could almost say that you are more likely to summon a Shi En on turn 1 than not.
Kageki+Kagemusha into Shi En. With the help of Kageki's effect
Kizan+Squire becomes Shi En. No squire in hand? Dojo can Kizan can pull Squire out of your deck.
Elder+Kagemusha into Shi En. Missing one or the other? ASCETICISM.
The deck is actually pretty scary. If you allow them to summon a Shi En, then you have to push back through not only his negation effect, but their spell and trap cards. It is easy to stall against six sams, but the longer you wait to react, the more cards they will have to use against you. I play-tested against friend of the blog Kavy last night using a Six Samurai deck against his real life Zombie plants. As soon as I got out Shi En, he had to get a good card on the field, through all of my Solemn Warnings and Mirror Force. He was able to place a Spirit Reaper on the field that took me a long time to get over, but the problem was his card usage while I am stalled. In a deck like sams that gets out its boss monster easily, then backs it up with a strong backrow, his only option was to deplete my resources. Brionac, Gaia Knight, Colossal, that is 3 Solemns I HAVE to use, because the deck certainly doesn't use bottomless. Either way, Six Sams, no matter who tells you otherwise, is one of the strongest decks in the game. The question is, what you do against them. It is a little bit like Infernities, insanely powerful, but if you play and side in a very specific way, you should be able to win the match.

Gladiator Beasts
A lot of people say that Glads are a weak deck, but there are a lot of tournament winning builds on the internet that work very well. The old Glads were all about tagging out in order to use their effects and Contact Fuse for their boss monsters. The new glads are more like a beatdown deck. It stops your opponent's monster cards, and beats them down with easily playable cards. Whenever applicable, you can Contact Fuse into something dangerous. Forbidden Lance and Safe Zone make the "defensive glad" deck obsolete. I actually like the way the new deck plays. Probably won't be very many showings of this deck, but there should be at least 1 in the top 32.

X-Sabers
In my opinion, X-Sabers are one of the best decks in the game. They are like blackwings, where every monster in the deck an amazing effect. The bosses have great effects too. The only thing Sabers don't have are multiple themed spell and trap cards(well, they have one good trap card). This doesn't make them less powerful though, because Sabers can use just about any spell and trap lineup they want. Some of the most recent tournament winning decks actually use cards that most players side in, just because the deck can do it! The thing is, not many players have the X-Saber cards, so that makes it so they never have a huge showing at tournaments. Despite that, Sabers still manage to get into the top 8 in all events, so that goes to show how good the deck is. I'm sure there will be an X-Saber deck in the top 4 this weekend.

Worms
This is the other deck that everyone wants to see in a YCS. They were in the top 32 at YCS Orlando, but more people are discovering the best part about Worms. Just like Koakis and Sabers, the Worm deck can side into just about anything. Chain Disappearance, Veiler, Dimensional Fissure, Gozen Match, a many other cards can be used to stop most things in the current metagame. I feel like Worms are ALMOST better than gravekeepers, simply for the fact that they don't use a field spell. Other than that, it is almost the same deck. Excessive backrow, easily summonable monsters, anti-meta built into the deck itself(bounce and flip effects). I doubt it will get into the top 4, but top 8 is possible if it isn't 50% Tengu Plants.

Scraps
I wouldn't use Tengu plants over Scraps even if someone payed me. The Scrap deck is SLIGHTLY more easy to side against, but it is much more offensive than Tengu Plants. People would disagree with me, but the explosive power in each deck is just about the same. Scraps can't make Brionac very easily, but your opponent will definitely be on their turns with how easy it is to synchro in the deck. The scrap deck doesn't need luck to synchro every turn, it just needs a turn to set up. After that, it will continue to generate fuel while draining your resources at the same time. Combine this idea with new, overpowered cards like Scrap Orthros, and you have ingredients for a top 16 deck! I'd love to see Scraps win the whole thing, but that would require a creative side deck.

There are many other decks that I would love to see in the top 32 this weekend.
-Nordics: My new deck seems deadly consistent, so I'm wondering how it could fair in a 2 day event.
-Fabled: Another deck that is essentially plant synchro, but better. Not a lot of people feel this way, so it may not see a lot of play.
-Tour Guide Rituals (Herald or Relinquished): Creates fields that are pretty difficult to get out of. Combine that with Safe Zone and your opponent will get pretty annoyed.
-Pure T.G.: No Hyper Librarian, but Halberd Cannon is a pretty good card.
-Hyperion Agents: Not a fan of this deck, but there is no doubt that people will play it. The level 4 and lower monsters just seem so weak to me.

Quickee Post - Still working on MAG

I'm still working on my MAG platinum and I am getting closer and closer with every day. I am up to 80% now, with the remaining trophies being:
1) Shoot down 25 Paratroopers - Bronze (23/25)
2) Destroy 20 Escort Vehicles - Silver (5/20)
3) Collect 58 Medals - Gold (40/58)

That is IT to finish off this game. The bronze and silver trophy should be simple enough, but the Gold trophy is one everyone has issues with. I only have 40 trophies, and getting another 18 sounds like so so many. Let's hope my roadmap works out for me:
1) Parachuting into battle 500 times. (458/500)
2) Win 100 Battles as Squad Leader. (91/100)
3) Kill 250 enemies with a sidearm. (231/250)
4) Kill 50 enemies at over 120m. (46/50)
5) Repair 25 sensor arrays. (13/25)
6) Destroy 50 sensor arrays. (21/50)
7) Destroy 50 mortar batteries. (38/50)
8) Destroy 100 gates. (86/100)
9) Repair 50 road blocks. (14/50)
10) Kill 100 paratroopers. (23/100)
11) Repair 25 vehicles. (5/25)
12) Repair 50 anti-air batteries. (22/50)

E3 2011 - Sony's Conference

I know this is a little late in the week to post about the Sony Conference, and like our good friend Jack Tretton, I'm sorry for that.

If you read around on the internet, there are mixed feelings about Sony's Conference. It didn't have the same kind of bangers like in previous years with FFXIV or VersusXIII. This year we had a lot of information about games we knew about, just missing a lot of details on them. So we got a lot of montages, a lot of new hardware in the Sony lineup, and lot of chit-chat.

Photobucket

The very first 5 minutes of the conference was Jack's apology about the Sony network outage. I'm a big fan of Jack and Sony, so it's nice to see so many people in the crowd despite all the developers losing money, and players losing game time and network options. According to the conference, the PSN reboot still is not 100% finished. We still have most of the options available to us Users, so I'll assume that the remaining 10% of the reboot is to refine the Network's structure. Everyone is glad it is up though. I believe that, despite how many people I know that took advantage to the outage(with well timed bashing), but secretly, they do have a lot of fun with the system.

On to games though, in which the Sony Conference demoed Uncharted 3, Resistance 3, NBA 2k12 with the Move, and Medieval Moves. NBA is not relevant to me, except for the fact that it is a video game. Medieval Moves is an action game designed to use the Playstaion Move. In the video, you play as a skeleton warrior and travel through various levels, solving puzzles, fighting enemies, and finding treasures. The guys from Zindagi Games(those who made Sports Champs) playing the game were using a single Move controller and nothing else, which makes me wonder how they moved the character around in seemingly 3d space. The worst part of motion gaming that don't use a joystick(Kinect games, some Move and Wii games) is that they become "rail" games, and that is not fun at all. For those who don't know, a rail game sends the user along a path, and you try to perform actions during the movement. Usually, it is completely automatic and the only controls you have over your progression through a level in the game are the paths you choose, the speed that your character rides these "rails", and your ability to clear the challenges. If Medieval Moves ISN'T a rail game and somehow allows the player to move in 3d space, it could actually be a fun title.

Photobucket

Of course, the 2 best looking games that were demoed were Uncharted 3 and Resistance 3, year of the trilogies. Of course, Uncharted looks fantastic, my Windows Snips hardly does the game any justice. The game seems to play just like Uncharted 2, except with new elements seamlessly thrown at the player. The demo takes place on a ship that eventually begins to capsize in the middle of combat. I feel that, in the past, games could do the same thing, except there would be a combat sequence, followed by a cinematic of the boat being wrecked, followed by the player trying to escape the sinking boat. In Uncharted, the action has everything at the same time! Everything is so well scripted, it brings that "movie feeling" that Uncharted 2 had, and makes it even more believable. I do wish they had time to talk about the multiplayer in Uncharted a little more, but there are plenty of videos on the internet for that. I jumped into Uncharted 2's multiplayer very late in the game's lifespan, but anyone who has tried it can tell you that it is a load of fun. Difficult, but pretty stylish.

Photobucket

Resistance 3 did not get as much air time, but once again there are videos on the internet that anyone can watch. I also feel that, besides the multiplayer, they try not to show too much of Resistance 3, or else it will spoil the scale of the game. It isn't like Gears where they can show you a nasty looking boss that gives you the thought of, "Whoa, that looks incredible! Now let's kill it!" Fights in Resistance are a bit more overwhelming in my opinion, and there would be no point in showing a lot of them as videos or else the excitement would be ruined. One thing they did want to stress was playing Resistance in 3D.
Playing it in 3D on Sony's new PS-branded 3D TV. (Banger 1)
Playing it in 3D, co-op with Sterioscopic Screen Blend. (Banger 2)
Okay, I did make up that last one. But basically, on Sony's new 24" TV(smaller than the one I have) can display 2 images on the screen at the same time. If you can imagine, 2 players playing with 3D glasses, can see 2 different images on the screen. This allows for split screen gaming, but the players see it on the full 24" display. Pretty cool for 500 dollars if you ask me. Just wish it was a TAD bigger.

There are other games that Sony wants us to be excited about.
Starhawk is a Warhawk successor, taking place across a galaxy. When I think Warhawk, then think galaxies, it makes me imagine the style of combat Star Wars Battlefront has, and I think this is VERY VERY close to a PS3 version of Battlefront. In the game modes displayed in a lot of the E3 demos on the internet, the combat is a lot closer to the ground, but if this is a Warhawk game, then there is definitely some sky combat. What is even cooler is that you can build structures in the game too. Obviously it won't be tower defense, but it seems that as you accumulate points, you can build structures to expand your territory. That alone will probably make this game a LOT of fun.

Dust 514 (Banger 3) is the PS3 version of Eve Online. By that, I mean that Eve Online, the PC game, takes place across galaxies, conquering territory in space ships. From the looks of it, Dust 514 on the PS3, brings that conquest to a smaller scale, with FPS and vehicle combat between opposing factions. I've never played EVE Online, so this is really just my guess, but I'm sure I'm not too far off from the idea of the game.

The remainder of the conference was reserved for the the new PSP, Sony's Next Generation Portable, the PSVita. I won't sit here and talk about names for consoles, because I've never heard of a console announcement where everyone had said they loved the name. Vita is everything we expected it to be though, except for the 3g service with AT&T. Here's a rundown of what it offers:
1) Five-inch, Multi-touch, OLED screen
2) Dual Analog sticks
3) Rear touchpad
4) Two cameras
5) Six-axis motion control
6) WiFI for 249.99 and 3g versions for 299.99
Now, just like Nintendo, the numbered features above are already more than enough to sell the product. What it needs after that is games. Sony didn't showcase too much at the conference for the Vita as far as games go. We got to see Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Ruin, and Street Fighter X Tekken with Cole from Infamous(LOL). Now let it be said that Vita graphics aren't PS3 graphics. IT'S PRETTY DANG CLOSE THOUGH. Vita is lucky enough to have processing power to create environments, dynamic lighting, and anything you'd expect on a home console. And best of all, no jaggies like on the 3DS! Just from the graphic engines in these games, the Vita blows all other systems and silly phone apps away. We don't have too much info on games, but you can just imagine that kind of amazing stuff coming out on Vita. Best of all is that a lot of them will also be on the PS3. Konami's pre-show on Friday hinted at "Transfarring", being able to play the Vita version of a PS3 game, and sharing the save file between the 2 systems. This was explained again during the Ruin demo at the conference, the player can explore a dungeon and save at anytime, then play the PS3 version and resume his progress. Whether or not this means you will need to buy 2 retail versions of the game is a good question, but the idea is pretty sound. Either way, the Vita will be a day 1 purchase for me. Someone posted on BG that most people have $500+ smart phones that they play stupid games on religiously. The Vita really is a portable for 2011, and anyone who would rather play Angry Birds on their phone instead of a big boy game on their Vita needs to have their head examined. (Or they should just download Angry Birds off the PSN and then play it on the Vita).

Sony: 7/10 (-3 for lack of bangers. +2 for Vita price point. -2 NBA 2k11, +1 Kobe, -1 No Sorcery Release Date, -1 No exclusive content for Dark Souls, +1 Sony 3d tv.)
Microsoft: 4/10 (-2 Kinect Disneyland Adventures, -3 Kinect Star Wars, -2 Halo 4, -2 Kinect Sports 2, +1 Kinect Sesame Street, +1 Gears of War 3, +1 Xbox bing)
Nintendo: 5/10 (-8 WiiU using 1 New controller and then WiiMotes - subject to change, +2 3DS games, +1 Reggie)

The Fabled Bandwagon

Lately, I have been talking about the Fabled Deck. The archetype is pretty much finished now that Hidden Arsenal 4 has been released and the only other cards that may be created are TCG exclusives(in which we have 1 already). With so many cards in the deck already, all we really need is a skeleton to base the deck around. Right now, I believe that is
3 Grimro
3 Cerburrel
3 Ganashia
2-3 Chawa
2-3 Krus

Of course, I use 3 Chawa and 3 Krus, because I think that you can't really have too much of those cards. It is until you start putting in non-fabled cards that you have to start taking away from the skeleton. For some people, that is Reborn Tengu. Some others use the plant engine - 2 Lonefire, 1 Dandy, 1 Glow Up, 1 Spore. Those are all nice cards, but we don't have any large tournament reports to base our information on.

Until now.

This is Fabio Minicozzi, winner of the Italy Nationals that took place last weekend. He won this huge event thanks to his build of the Fabled Deck. It is quite a bit different than mine, and a LOT more different to the other builds floating around on the internet. Let's take a look!
Monsters: 22
3 Reborn Tengu
3 Snipe Hunter
3 Fabled Grimro
3 The Fabled Chawa
3 The Fabled Cerburrel
2 The Fabled Ganashia
2 Fabled Krus
1 Gorz
1 Sangan
Spells: 12
2 Instant Fusion
2 Mystical Space Typhoon
2 Pot of Avarice
1 Dark Hole
1 Monster Reborn
1 Card Destruction
1 Mind Control
1 Book of Moon
1 Giant Trunade
Traps: 6
3 Reckless Greed
1 Dust Tornado
2 Solemn Warning
Extra Deck
1 The Fabled Unicore
3 Fabled Ragin
1 Catastor
1 Brionac
1 Gaia Knight
1 Black Rose
1 Ancient Sacred Wyvern
1 Stardust
1 Scrap Dragon
1 Trishula
1 Charubin the Fire Knight
1 Darkfire Dragon
1 Musician King
Side Deck
3 Puppet Plant
2 Kinetic Soldier
2 Fabled Gallabas
2 Cyber Dragon
1 Chimeratech
2 Gozen Match
1 Dust Tornado
2 Malevolent Catastrophe

What I like is that he plays the deck in the best way possible. That is, making Fabled Ragins, drawing cards, and synchroing past all of your opponent's cards. With the Reckless Greed, it seems he wants to be more OTK focused, with the ability to draw into Trunade more easily. After Trunade, you can synchro as much as you want with no fear of anything besides a Gorz. As you can see, most of his spell and trap lineup is to get rid of an opposing backrow, assuming that that is the only real threat to stop your advances. I don't really like Reckless Greed in any deck, but I can see why he used it here. Can't really see myself trying it out.

The next card that is different is Instant Fusion. When you look at JP decklists, and the AI deck lists in the YGO WC2011 video game, Instant Fusion is a very popular card. I guess, here in America, it doesn't see much play. Most likely because most TCG decks refuse to run cards that don't work without another card with it(unless it is a boss monster). Everyone else sees Instant Fusion as "the other nontuner." Whatever monster you would special summon to make your amazing synchro play, can be done with 1 Instant Fusion and 1000 life points. I was lucky enough to grab 3 of these, but again, I don't know if I would actually use it.

Next up is Snipe Hunter, a card I have never liked. However, it being at 3 isn't something to scoff at. Like Phoenix Wing, Snipe Hunter can hit any card on the field. It does target, so unfortunately, if you don't plan on destroying their monster, your card will fall into a Bottomless Trap hole. However, passing priority to your opponent can save you from having to discard at all in a lot of situations. Also, a lot of people don't even run bottomless anymore, so chances are you either bait out a solemn warning, or you will get to roll for something! And the best part about rolling, is you can't negate it with Stardust. Even better is that you can do it multiple times in 1 turn. Snipe Hunter->Ganashia->Grimro for Cerb->Snipe Hunter->Cerb->Ragin. And the fact that you could run 3 of those makes for an excellent contender against Phoenix Wing Wind Blast.

If you think about it, it seems so difficult to get momentum back if your opponent stops a play. Decks like Glads don't necessarily have to have a backrow to win, though it definitely helps. All they really need is something to attack and not die from, and in a deck like this with only solemn warnings and 1 book of moon to stop them, that seems like a tough match to me. Samurai and Plant Synchro are similar to Fableds in that whoever can put a good monster on the field will probably be in a good position. Gravekeepers and Hero Beat seem difficult, but perhaps with the large amount of S/T destruction in his deck and side deck, he had an easier time.

I do have most of the deck finished now. Of course, my build used The Tricky, which I feel can be replaced by snipe hunter for sure. Hopefully, I will have tournament results for Fableds soon, so keep a lookout for that.

E3 2011 Day 2 - Nintendo as a whole

Each year, Nintendo has an excellent opportunity to wow the audience with something never before seen or imagined. Whether you think the new concepts work well or not is your opinion, but no one can deny that Nintendo does bring something new to the table(Entertainment Center) every year. This year is no different with the brand new WiiU being announced. But before I talk about my thoughts on the new console, we can touch on some of the other announcements today.

The Nintendo 3DS is a big part of Nintendo's business this year, and better content is lined up this year. The game library is rather small at the minute, but there are new games coming out, including Starfox64 3D, Mario 3d, Luigi's Mansion 2, Resident Evil Revelations, and more. Not only that, but the 3DS shop will open for Virtual Console downloads. I still don't own a 3DS myself, but the amount of games that developers have lined up is looking pretty good. When people think of the 3DS, they immediately think of games they have played a million times before, or games without a lot of depth. The 3DS is just barely behind in content to offer players, but the games themselves are hard to find anywhere else. There just aren't that many games that play like Starfox, and there certainly isn't anything like Luigi's Mansion. The most exciting looking game to me is that new Kid Icarus. Kid Icarus on the 3DS is a really fast action game that shows exactly why the 3DS is good enough for real gamers. I'll be honest, a lot of the games on my Nintendo DS are just too boring for me. You run around and touch, it is as if the hardware just can't do enough to keep me occupied. Then, you look at Kid Icarus. It is a handheld, so the graphics during gameplay are still a little behind. But the console has enough "energy" to make a game that could keep someone like me awake. There is multiplayer where you fight opposing angels, lots of weapons to slash or blast things away, and best of all, it could be called an entirely new experience on a Nintendo Console. It definitely isn't one of those re-hashes, remakes, or remasters. To me, it is almost unfair to see good games going to the 3DS, but you have to remember that it isn't the original Nintendo DS. There are only going to be 2 (good) handhelds by the Holiday season, and whether you(I) want to believe it or not, the 3DS is one of those.

The other exciting item releasing this year is the new Zelda: Skyward Sword. We saw a lot about the new Zelda last year, so there isn't much of a need to talk about it. If you guys don't remember, the new Zelda uses the Wii Motion Plus for motion gaming with better tracking. The game is a lot brighter looking than Twilight Princess and maybe even Ocarina of time, so maybe we can expect a Toon Link-esque atmosphere, in regular Link's world.

But enough about that, the most important part of the presser was for the WiiU.
I want to make a few things clear about the console first:
1) It IS an actual console, not just a controller peripheral for your Wii.
2) The graphics can go up to 1080p.
3) The release date is 2012.
4) It is backwards compatible with Wii accessories AND games.

These points alone usually mean that the system is on the right track to success. One small issue is that the console itself was not really touched on today at Nintendo's conference. Instead, most of the information was about the controller and what you can do with it. The controller is basically a tablet. It has 2 Analog sticks, trigger buttons and face buttons. It has cameras, motion sensors and a 6+ inch touch screen, so when you look at it, it looks like half of a 3DS. There aren't too many games actually made for the system, so most of what Nintendo had to show was conceptual, meaning things that the hardware COULD do for game developers. With motion controller, you can title the controller to manipulate the game. With the camera, you can move the controller around to point at objects on the screen(imagine zooming with a scope through your controller). With the touch screen you can do things like a 3DS such as drawing emblems or solving puzzles, maybe even draw out a path or two. Then, since the console supports Wii controllers, you can use the WiiU controller for 1 player, and the WiiMote with everyone else. So there could be a competitive game where the WiiMote players team up against the WiiU player, that has access to things on his tablet. Sounds interesting? There's no way you can say no. The question is that how do we get games for hardcore players out of something like the WiiU. Third party developers like EA already plan to bring good games like Battlefield and their sports to the WiiU(In 2012!), so if you don't have an Xbox or PS3, you don't have to miss out on those games. We don't know how the WiiU versions of games will differ though, which is where the money lies. Another very important piece of information that Reggie and the Nintendo Conference didn't cover much on and that is the new system's online capabilities. It will obviously allow players play together online and follow leaderboards, but network capabilities for the Xbox and PS3 are more than that now. Even worse is that Nintendo is infamous for their online community. Playing with your friends requires coordination outside of the console. Meeting people and becomming friends is a chore. And worst of all, most current games don't have a leaderboard that you can compare yourself to people you know; only to the top players in the world. So this is another point that Nintendo has to address.

And honestly, that is All of Nintendo's conference. The 3DS and the WiiU, seems like this year isn't looking too good. We have been told that there will be other games to look forward to besides WiiPlay Motion and Zelda: Skyward Sword. In my opinion, I have never been a big Nintendo fan, but I am excited to see what sort of games come out on the 3DS. I recommend that all of you guys at least take a look at what it has to offer.

Thanks for reading.
